‘Joker’ Opens Huge at the Box Office

Article by Eric Lee

Joker has opened with a massive $93.5 million at the box office this weekend.

The Todd Phillips-directed film has broken records for highest box office opening in October. The previous record holder was last year’s Venom with a figure of $80 million. It also came close to matching 2017’s Justice League‘s $93.8 million.

On an international stage, Joker performed equally as strong, opening to $140.5 million in foreign markets. Cumulatively, the Joaquin Phoenix-led movie has already earned a grand total of $234 million.

Looking Forward

No doubt these numbers are good news for Warner Bros. as the $93.5 million take far exceeds the studio’s initial projections. Now the question remains, how far can Joker go? The positive is that the film will not have a lot of similar movies to compete with in the next few weeks. However, it’s also possible that the initial buzz of the movie could wear off, making attendance drop in the next few weeks.

Another interesting tidbit that may impede the box office is the lack of Chinese viewers. Joker may not have the benefit of a box office boost from the Chinese market. So far, the movie has not been approved to be shown there.

Whatever happens, there’s no doubt that the film can already be considered a success.

Joker is now playing in theaters nationwide.
