“Drain The Swamp” Part One

Rob Williams is back at the helm of Suicide Squad, after a short two-issue stint by Si Spurrier. Williams is joined by the artistic talents of Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira for this instalment. Let me tell you, this creative team rocks. The story puts forward a really interesting question; What happens to Taskforce X when the government creates themselves a brand new American hero?
This is what Suicide Squad should be. Everything is falling apart around Amanda Waller and she’s trying to keep some form of control in her life. I find that Waller sometimes gets left as a background character, so it’s nice to see Williams focus on her and how being in charge of Suicide Squad affects her personal life.
Williams Back On Top
I enjoyed Spurrier’s run on the comic, but was not left wanting this issue. Williams jumps straight back into the writer’s chair and creates a fantastic story that had me interested from the get go. The government creating it’s own superhero, to do exactly what Taskforce X does. How will that affect Waller and her squad? Two of the team’s heavy hitters are still reeling from the effects of the last Williams run, with both Killer Croc and Enchantress out of commission. How will that affect the squad on missions? A lot of questions are left unanswered at the end of the issue, with the last few pages creating even more!
The artwork is brilliant as well, Pansica and Ferreira do a wonderful job with the facial expressions of each character, something I feel that Suicide Squad has lacked recently. Too many times, I’ve felt like the art of the comic has been lacking. The pair however, do well to focus on the details of each panel, allowing the reader to take in all the conflicting emotions within the squad. This is quite possibly, one of the strongest issues of Suicide Squad that I’ve had the pleasure of reading for a very long time.
Conclusion
This issue has everything it should, plus more. There is action. Intriguing plot threads. It has heartfelt moments. Suicide Squad has been going from strength to strength in the last few issues. I sincerely hope that they keep this trend going and that this creative team stays on this comic for time to come.
Overall, a fantastic issue with much room to grow.
