“The Victim Syndicate,” Part 2: Payback

Writer: James Tynion IV

Artist: Eddy Barrows

Last time, the team was coming to terms with the loss of Red Robin aka Tim Drake. Luke “Batwing” Fox hosted a police gala to introduce new weapons for the GCPD. The Victim Syndicate arrive on the scene. The team does a quick change to take on the “victims.” One of their crew, Mr. Noxious, gives Spoiler a mere look, causing her to vomit profusely. Before they take their leave, the Victim Syndicate vow that more people will be hurt, unless Batman reveals his identity and gives up being a crime-fighter.

Back at the Belfry, Luke familiarizes himself with the tech created by Tim Drake. Then he, Batman and Batwoman discuss the identities of the Victim Syndicate, as well as their next plan of attack. Batman leaves to check on Spoiler, who is recuperating at Leslie Thompkins’ free clinic. Dr. Thompkins gives Batman a stern lecture about putting people in harm’s way as he wages his war on crime. At the close of the issue, Stephanie “Spoiler” Brown is visited by Victim Syndicate’s leader: The First Victim.

Once again, Tynion and Barrows have not disappointed. Another top-notch effort of suspenseful storytelling. Detective Comics has grown to be one of my favorite Batman books. And this arc peels off layer after layer unveiling new twists and turns to uncover the mysterious Victim Syndicate. I hope Tynion doesn’t put Stephanie through too much more. She just lost her boyfriend, for Pete’s sake! Overall, a great story!
