Whether or not you enjoyed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, you’ve got to admire all the work and dedication that went into what you see on screen. Sometimes, the little details are what make the difference. Everything you see on the screen had a pretty careful decision process behind it. As was the case with costume designer, Michael Wilkinson’s choices in dressing Batfleck.
In a recent article in Men’s Journal, Wilkinson described just how he wanted this Bruce Wayne to look. As Batman tends to be, Wilkinson went with a timeless look that exuded a lot of elegance and luxury. Lots of Gucci, tailored suits, dark colors, BW mongrams, and special fabric were placed on Bruce Wayne. Although I don’t find myself taking tips from Wilkinson on style (not because I don’t trust his choices, but simply because I don’t have the funds to execute), there’s a few very interesting tidbits in there about Batfleck and the making of the flick.
According to Wilkinson, Batfleck’s physique was constantly changing throughout filming as he kept going back to the gym to achieve the Batman body. And because Bruce Wayne could only wear clothes that fit him perfectly, the team had to re-tailor his clothes from time to time. Wilkinson says, “Ben’s body was changing day-to-day, his measurements were constantly getting bigger, so some of the suits were getting adjusted constantly.”
Being the costume designer, Wilkinson, of course, worked on the Batsuit. Now, if you thought, “Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that Batsuit before.” Well, there’s a reason for that. Wilkinson and his team actually created a special type of fabric so as to accentuate Batfleck’s physique and better reflect Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns. Unfortunately, they didn’t go into any more detail regarding the Batsuit, but if you’re into Bruce Wayne’s style, check out the rest of the article here.
