Vertigo Roundup: Suiciders: Kings of HELL.A. #1

Writer: Lee Bermejo

Artists: Lee Bermejo & Alessandro Vitti

Kings of HELL.A. happens to be a prequel to the first Suiciders series and is highly accessible to new readers. It features a gripping narrative and definitely earns its mature rating; the introduction will make you have flashbacks to when you watched The Miracle of Life in middle school.

If you are someone who is a fan of The Warriors or Escape from New York/LA, this book is a fiendishly exquisite marriage of those concepts. Keep in mind, however, that it is in no way a knockoff. I’m just saying a John Carpenter produced score would complement this read nicely.

Alessandro Vitti provides much of the artwork for this issue and does a fine job of it. If you came to see Lee Bermejo, just know that he draws only the cover and introduction. Admittedly, I would like to see more Bermejo because, well, he’s Lee Bermejo. Still, what’s given is rather good looking and you may be hard pressed to even notice when the transition occurs.

All in all, Vertigo has released another title that warrants your attention. I find it highly suspect that it dropped the week I attended a Mad Max themed party. Coincidence? Probably.
