Review Roundup: Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion #2 and The Dark & Bloody #1

With a holiday weekend upon us and a couple books still on my desk, only one of which is from Vertigo, I decided to do something a little different, yet familiar this week. I’ve consolidated two reviews into a column that would normally be our Vertigo Roundup. We hope you enjoy the following feedback to a cosmic epic you should have some familiarity with and a brand new horror series you should check out. Be sure to come back next week for another onslaught of reviews.

Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion #2

Writer: Tom Taylor

Artist: Ethan Van Sciver

Tom Taylor has created quite the enthralling intergalactic adventure that no fan of Green Lantern Corps stories should miss. Believe me, it’s just as good as anything from Peter Tomasi’s GLC run; die hard fans of ringslingers should know what I’m talking about and how high of a compliment I intended that statement to be. The artwork is once again highly detailed and cinematic thanks to the pencils of the incomparable Ethan Van Sciver. And, much like any definitive Green Lantern story, it adds something new to the mythos.

The Dark & Bloody #1

Writer: Shawn Aldridge

Artist: Scott Godlewski

Boy howdy, does Shawn Aldridge ever have a good ear for dialogue. The Dark & Bloody has a grounded, real world setting in the form of rural Kentucky. Its impressive first issue establishes the tone of the series and gives readers a chance to really get to know and savor its believable characters.

The grisly, bloody aspects are there briefly, as the worst is surely yet to come. This looks to be the beginning of a well developed, unique supernatural monster story – with a bit of moonshinin’ – and not something you would find in a SyFy original movie.
