While taking part in an “EPIX Hollywood Sessions” roundtable discussion with other notable actors, Michael Keaton addressed the issue of the discomfort that came with wearing the iconic Batsuit in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). Robert Downey Jr., who has played Iron Man on several occasions, commented on how streamlined the superhero costume has become in the past quarter century.
“What nobody understands either, is that you were the guinea pig for the [first version] of all of those suits – which by the way, twenty years later, I’m told only got infinitesimally more manageable and comfortable.”
Keaton responded with:
“I’m very claustrophobic. The first time I was locked in [to the outfit], I thought, ‘This is never going to happen’ … but this fear ends up working perfectly for the character.”
It is well known that the costumes Keaton wore didn’t provide the most pleasurable experiences, so you have to admire his professionalism and dedication. You can check out more of the discussion in the video at the top of this article.
