Gotham Review: The Mask

Synopsis: Gordon & Bullock investigate a deadly fight club.

Another promising effort from the fine city of Gotham this week. A few weeks ago, I wrote about the show’s first GREAT episode and hoped it would break new ground from there. Unfortunately it hasn’t, yet hasn’t gone backward either. It’s maintaining a solid B/B- which is enough for me to return week after week.

This week’s episode focuses on Gotham‘s version of Roman Sionis/Black Mask. Roman, I mean “Richard”, is holding these underground fight clubs and has to dispose of bodies when things go dead wrong. Enter team Gordon, who track him down and put a stop to it.

It’s a decent attempt at a Batman villain that hasn’t had very much treatment outside of the comics (The Batman cartoon and Batman:Under the Red Hood are all that come to my mind). So it was nice to see a live-action interpretation of a pretty decent character.

There are also other snippets that add to what we’ve been seeing on the show lately. Oswald Cobblepot (AWESOME!) shakes things up even more with the mob, we another look at Edward Nigma behind closed doors (YES!) and Barbara leaves Jim. Sidebar: is this actress not just terrible? I shudder when she’s on screen.

Overall, another decent episode from all involved. It just seems like they are still playing things safe, in a city that doesn’t know what that word means. Maybe all we need is a District Attorney to shake things up, and I think Gotham knows just where to find one.

Rating: 7.5/10
