Game Informer has released a video featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the motion capture process used in Batman: Arkham Knight.
There’s so many things that make the Arkham series so utterly magnificent. I could spend hours on a long-winded panegyric raving about all of the merits. Considering that nobody has time (or really has a desire) to hear me go on for hours, let me at least try to choose one fantastic element of the games: the CG animation. Those cutscenes are worth watching as a standalone movie without even playing the game. As a big fan of storytelling, I was glued to the screen every time we were treated to a cutscene. I know most gamers don’t like them as it detracts from valuable gameplay time, but I’m not an average gamer. Initially, I was drawn to this series for the story. I played to see the story unfold through the cutscenes. Having played the game and not being completely brain dead (just a little bit), I loved the gameplay and stayed on throughout the series for that alone… which I can say very fervently was the case for Arkham Origins.
As a treat to me and anyone like me (not many), Game Informer has given us an exclusive look behind Rocksteady’s motion capture for Batman: Arkham Knight. It’s a neat little featurette, but nothing too astounding aside from how Rocksteady intends for gameplay to cut more seamlessly into cutscenes. I was actually more impressed with the staunch adherence to secrecy. Apparently, when they hired their lead animator, Zafar Coban, he had no idea he’d be working on Batman. Then again, I suppose it makes sense, since they can’t go blabbing to all of their rejected candidates.
