The Batarang is probably the most essential (and recognizable) tool in Batman’s arsenal on his never-ending war on crime. Most often, he’s seen using it as a weapon to slap away or disable firearms, but writers have found other ways to incorporate them. The most recent live-action incarnation being The Dark Knight Trilogy, where Christopher Nolan’s grounded and realistic Batman seemed to have found a lot less value in the Batarang and reduced them down to a glamorized shuriken instead of the multipurpose tool that we’re so used to seeing. Still though, it was pretty badass to behold.
And of course that didn’t deter Hollywood-employed blacksmith Tony Swatton from taking a stab (pun surprisingly not intended) at forging his own set of Batarangs on his YouTube show, Man at Arms. This episode features Swatton forging some formidable-looking Batarangs in the same vein of Nolan’s Dark Knight flicks at twelve inches across with razor sharp edges.
Take a look:
It’s a fascinating watch and sure to make weapons enthusiasts and Bat-fans sufficiently giddy. Embodying both descriptions, I was pretty excited. Obviously, these Batarangs are not perfect replicas of the ones from the Dark Knight, but after seeing those things pierce cars and break tube TVs, I’m not going to nitpick. I’m pretty sure those are more functional than the ones in the movies.
Tony Swatton is a veteran blacksmith whose body of work includes creating swords for Pirates of the Caribbean movies, weapons for The Hunger Games and Sucker Punch, as well as props for the Joel Schumacher Batman flicks.
Impressive, isn’t it?
