Former Batman actor George Clooney has spoken about why he believes Batman and Robin is a “terrible film”.
In an interview with GQ magazine, Clooney reflected on his career highs and lows. Of course, Bat-fans remember Clooney playing Batman in the much-maligned Batman and Robin movie. The film’s outrageous sets, silly dialogue, and over-the-top characters are often easy targets for fans.
However, Clooney fully accepts any responsibility for his contributions to the movie. He’s even gone on the record as saying that the movie is a bad film. Here is his rationale as to why he thinks it’s okay to tease it.
The only way you can honestly talk about things is to include yourself and your shortcomings in those things. Like, when I say Batman and Robin‘s a terrible film, I always go, “I was terrible in it”, because I was, number one. But also because then it allows you the ability to say, “Having said I sucked in it, I can also say that none of these other elements worked, either.” You know? Lines like “Freeze, Freeze!”
Classy Clooney
George Clooney has a point. If you’re going to lambast a project that has hundreds of other people working on it, then it’s only fair to also roast yourself. Despite having no creative control over the other ridiculous elements of the movie, his willingness to work on it shows that he implicitly approved of the crazy direction.
This is a pretty good lesson on how actors or filmmakers should “complain” about film projects they were a part of. Most of the time, they tend to place the blame of the projects’ failures on another party. This, in turn, makes them appear ungrateful, and unable to accept some responsibility. Clooney has it right. If you’re going to make fun of a past project, then you have to also make fun of yourself. That is a class act move.
