First Horrifying Look at Absolute Scarecrow

Writer Scott Snyder revealed the look for Absolute Scarecrow.

On X- formerly Twitter, Absolute Batman head Snyder unveiled the headshot of the new version of Scarecrow. He accompanied it with the caption “The straw man…#absolutescarecrow”

Additionally DC also released the cover to Absolute Batman #19 where Scarecrow will debut. The cover features a Batman holding two daggers with the Scarecrow in the reflection. One dagger has a near-full body shot of the villain and the other dagger has a headshot of Scarecrow widening his mouth to inhuman levels.

Breaking Down the Absolute Scarecrow

There is a lot of stuff to unpack with this latest incarnation of Scarecrow. First off, this Scarecrow has freakin’ buttons for eyes! How disgusting is that? It is giving some real Coraline. There is also all of the stitches on his face, including sewing his own mouth together. And notice on the cover of issue 19 that Scarecrow sports a very noticeable sewn scar across his neck line.

So what is the deal for this version of Jonathan Crane? Is he some sort of reanimated scarecrow? Or is that even Crane’s face to begin with? What if he is like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs or Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where that is someone else’s skin/ face that Crane sewn onto his body? If that is the case, then he seems very reminiscent of Joker’s  strapped-on face in Snyder’s own Death of a Family storyline. Of course, this Scarecrow could be potentially more horrifying since that is probably somebody else’s skin and face on him.

The Absolute Scarecrow will make his creepy first appearance in Absolute Batman #19 in June.
