DC Comics announced more information and art for the upcoming title Barbara Gordon: Breakout.
DC originally revealed Breakout as a part of their comics line-up Next Level publishing initiative this past October. But at the time, they did not say who was the creative team, nor give any further details about the series. But now we know both.
Mariko Tamaki and Amancay Nahuelpan are the creative team behind the series. The book will focus on a captured Barbara Gordon and her misadventures in prison. Police Commissioner Vandal Savage arrested Barbara for being an aide to the Bat-family. Now she is forced to survive in on her own. Check out the full official DC description.
Framed. Outlawed. Hunted. The extralegal activities of Gotham City’s vigilantes have never been more dangerous. After Barbara Gordon is arrested for aiding the Bat-Family, she is shipped off to Supermax, GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage’s pet-project prison for all who oppose him. She will find herself alone, surrounded by dangerous criminals and equally dangerous guards, in a place where nothing is what it seems. The true danger is just beginning.
The Unknowns of ‘Barbara Gordon: Breakout’
What is interesting is there is still a lot of unknowns. Does Vandal Savage know she is secretly Batgirl and Oracle? Or is he just arresting her as regular Barbara Gordon? Where is the Bat-family or her father James Gordon? Why are they not able to help her in prison? Will this impact her relationship with them in future? Which criminals will Barbara meet in prison?
As per the norm, DC is releasing issue one with a ton of variant covers. Karl Kerschl illustrates the main cover.
David Nakayama and Yanick Paquette each drew a variant cover. Nakayama’s cover also comes in a foil variant format. Amancay Nahuelpan draws a 1:25 retailer incentive cover variant. Finally, there is also a DC: Next Level variant cover by Jorge Corona.
Barbara Gordon: Breakout #1 hits comic shops on May 13th.
