Lady Gaga opens up about the disappointing box office performance of Joker: Folie à Deux.
Joker: Folie à Deux is the sequel to 2019’s Joker. The original film made over $1 billion and earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Lead Actor. However, the sequel was not nearly as well-received and failed to make a huge impact on the box office. Folie à Deux made $200 million- a far cry from the $1 billion previously.
Gaga reflected on the sequel’s mixed critical reception. It seems that she is taking it more in stride and remember that it is more important to be bold and adventurous with her artistic choices.
“People just sometimes don’t like some things. It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended… When that makes [fear of failing] makes way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”
Lady Gaga is right that it is important as an artist to continue to push yourself and expand your repertoire. Otherwise, you are just become stagnant and not make anything new.
Joker: Folie à Deux can be seen on Max streaming.
