“No Further Bets” – Part Two

Catwoman #70 brings the international connection that set off the last issue so strongly. We get the long look into Selina’s past, and the dramatic artwork to a real head. We see Selina meeting with ghosts from her past, and her settle in new, European locales, all to stunning effect. The bold line work and matte, realistic colors adds a depth and complexity that is very welcome in a nuanced new look at Catwoman, after the stellar run that recently ended.
We can really feel the detail in the artistic expression of bringing such iconic European cities to life. The monuments of Berlin and Budapest all add a level of unexpected realism to my comic about the greatest thief in DC.
Grønbekk has done wonders to bring the conversational tone of Selina’s thoughts to life. We get the real sense that after all the craziness, we can see her finding a semblance of peace and normalcy in Europe. But when do main characters in the DC universe ever get that? Grønbekk has wrapped those hopes up with the welcome sight of various mysterious individuals all coming for our famous cat.

Conclusion
Catwoman #70 introduces a fresh layer of realism to the DC Universe that is both unlikely and welcome. We get a very nice indication that this story line will be chock full with fascinating intrigue, with changing locales and multiple competing powers that would make the entire story feel very like a 2000s spy thriller. A genre that has not been done in a long time, but one that I deeply welcome. Catwoman’s versatility as a character strikes again, and it’s a welcome sight!
