Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb Reunite for ‘Hush 2’

Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee reunite to do a sequel to the insanely popular ‘Hush’ storyline.

At New York Comic Con, Lee made the announcement at his ‘Jim Lee and Friends’ panel. But Loeb and Lee are not the only members of the creative team  working together again for the storyline. Inker Scott Williams and colorist Alex Sinclair also will return for the sequel.

Even crazier, Lee revealed that he has been working on the comic for a while. He was able to show the completed first cover of the story, as well as some uncolored interior pages.

Notice how the word ‘Hush’ is spelled out in the buildings behind Batman.  Also can you spy ‘Loeb’, ‘Lee’, and the roman numerals ‘II’ in the graffiti?

Catch Up on Hush

Justice League Unlimited #1 will feature a mini prelude. The actual storyline itself will actually be told within the pages of the main Batman comic, starting with issue #158. No word yet on how that is supposed to affect the current creative team of Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez’s run.

Incidentally, if you missed out on the original story or want to recreate the magic of reading ‘Hush’ serially, DC will reprint the facsimile editions of the original issues #608 and #609 in January. Presumably they will continue publishing the entire run in facsimile editions.

What is the Plot of ‘Hush 2’?

Not much is known about the storyline’s plot. The interiors do show Hush moving pieces around on a board. The pieces seem to depict Batman, Huntress, Red Hood, and Catwoman. Hush also tosses away the game piece of Alfred. Presumably that is in reference to Alfred’s death.

It will be interesting to see what ‘Hush 2’ can do to recreate the magic from the original arc. A huge part of the appeal of the first story arc was the mystery of who was Hush- this mysterious villain who masterminded a scheme to bring down Batman using all of his rogues gallery.

But now that 20 years have past since it was revealed to be Thomas “Tommy” Elliot- an old childhood friend of Bruce Wayne’s. Not only that, but Hush has appeared multiple times where we delved even more into his back story since then.

Look no further than Paul Dini’s Detective Comics story arc “The Heart of Hush” where we see exactly why Elliot hated Wayne so much. His hatred stemmed from an overbearing mother who compulsively compared himself to his childhood friend Bruce which drove him to murder her.

Will ‘Hush 2’ delve into that backstory? Beyond that, there have been so many other changes to the DC universe, that it seems hard to even rectify it with the original comic. Like, which Huntress will be featured in the sequel? As far as readers are aware, the Helena Bertinelli version that was in the original no longer even exist in current continuity. So who knows how that will work.

The Hush 2 prelude will be in Justice League Unlimited #1 on November 27th.  ‘Hush 2’ will begin in March 2025 with Batman #158.
