Review by Fay Clark

Who’s ready for the exciting finale of this arc?! I AM NOT. Every time I think it’s all good, I get blindsided and taken for a rollercoaster ride! Much like last time we saw the Birds, nothing is ever simple or straightforward. Let’s see if they can fix it all in Birds of Prey #13.

Backup for the Birds

Kelly Thompson has clearly planned this for a very long time. The amount of characters that are in Birds of Prey #13 is mad. I don’t think I have seen a comic this stacked in a while. We have the portal side, with the Birds team and the real world side of people trying to figure out the portal. Two teams, a lot of powers and some magic. Yep, that makes for a very action packed issue. Thompson has been able to write for all of these characters and make them true individuals. Even if they are off panel, you can tell who the speech bubble belongs to.

There is such an interesting plot line running throughout this arc. Then you mix in the subplot and the character development and wonder how Kelly has fit it all into 5 issues. Must have been a lot of emotional processing and late nights for Thompson. Seeing the bonds created by old and new characters warms the heart, especially as it involves Cass! Ya girl needs more strong friendships in her life to keep her grounded.

I’m a Snnaaaaaaake

Gavin Guidry has a wild imagination. you can see that come out in Birds of Prey #13. There are several panels that are artistically majestic. How Gavin was able to come up with things like this is beyond me. When you add in the amazing color work of Jordie Bellaire you know for sure you have something stunning to look at. There are several panels towards the end of the issue that I had to go back and look at. I genuinely spent so much time just trying to figure out how someone can create things like this. There was chaos on almost every page, but controlled chaos.

Conclusion

What an ending to the arc! I want more, I neeeeeeeeed more. These women and their shenanigans are amazing. It is fun, serious, heart wrenching sarcastic, good times all round. If Kelly T can just write this series indefinitely, that would be amazing.
