Things are uncertain for the greatest thief in DC Comics here in Catwoman #67. Catwoman learned about the extent of her blessing/curse in the last issue, but she can’t merely sit and wait when figures are working against Gotham City. She has to act, and this issue does wonders at showing just how far Selina has grown over the past few issues.

This issue does a great job of showing intense action across time. There are many quick cuts between the action showing up, and the battles in full swing. The tension right there when the story starts, with all her explanations as to what is going on for those behind, or reading it on release. We feel things truly ease down and it’s a welcome bit of reprieve until the chaos and fallout kicks us in the teeth once again. We’re reminded, not only of Selina’s mortality, but also her uncertainty. It gives us a level of stakes that are surprising to find in a comic book story.

We can count on Giandomenico to bring us some stellar artwork, really showing intense artwork and iconic characters in a level of gritty realism that’s befitting the story on show. The use of scale, showing just how big and destructive the forces attacking Gotham are, is on full show, and the unlikely appearance of that character on the final page is left to look iconic and recognisable, but still fresh and oddly quite realistic. Who knew that a battle issue with magic weapons and cat gods could have such sincerity.

Conclusion

Catwoman #67 brings us a heavy look at Selina’s struggles at this dramatic turn in the story. She’s not being seen by the most scrupulous doctor, so anything could happen through this twist.
