DC Comics Announces New ‘DC All In’ Initiative

DC writers Scott Snyder (The Batman Who Laughs, Superman Unchained), and Joshua Williamson (Death of the Justice League, The Flash) revealed in an announcement video the biggest initiative to come out of DC Comics in recent years: DC All In.

Pulling together a wide variety of writers and artists, “All In” will be a jumping-point for new and alternate story arcs full of restarted and reimagined heroes. Snyder said:

All In is about inviting everybody in — the existing creators, some new creators, everything — to tell their best stories, and to begin them all at one point. The idea is to create the greatest jumping-on point for you guys in many, many years.

Williamson’s current crossover event, Absolute Power, is expected to conclude on October 2nd with issue #4, and then followed up DC All In Special #1, written by Williamson and Snyder, and drawn by artists Daniel Sampere (Wonder Woman, Injustice 2) and Wes Craig (Deadly Class, Kaya). DC All In Special will cover the aftermath of Absolute Power. It will introduce a brand new universe, created by Darkseid in events that the creators did not want to spoil. This new Absolute Universe is an alternate setting where we see the origins of the DC heroes retold in compelling, fresh ways. Synder describes it as a chance to welcome writers and artists to reinvent their favourite characters stories from the beginning. Snyder says:

The biggest thing we wanna communicate: this is not a retcon or a reboot or something like that. It’s a celebration and an expansion if the great storytelling that’s been happening at DC. Its an invitation to jump in.

Absolute Batman

Claiming Absolute Batman for himself is Snyder, alongside artist Nick Dragotta (East of West, Ghost Cage).  This new, uncharted universe is more chaotic, dangerous, and wild than the main DCU. The Absolute Universe will force its heroes to underdog roles and challenge them in new, unexpected ways. Except for trauma, we all know that will be in there somewhere.

Several weeks ago, a black and white image was leaked with a list of stars involved in making the new Absolute Universe: Jason Aaron (Thor, Avengers), Deniz Camp (20th Century Man), Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk, X-Men Red), Che Grayson (Batman: Urban Legends), Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Black Hammer), Jahnoy Lindsay (Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow), Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian, The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives), Nick Robles (The Dreaming: Waking Hours), Rafa Sandoval (Action Comics, X-Men: Legacy), Hayden Sherman (Dark Spaces: Dungeon), and Kelly Thompson (Birds of Prey, Black Widow). Snyder concluded the video with:

Let’s all launch our biggest stories, whether they’re radical reinventions of the characters — whether they’re continuing, awesome legacy stories that are happening in the main DCU — let’s do all of it at once.

DC promised to have more announcements and details about “All In” and the Absolute Universe at San Diego Comic Con next week. Keep your eyes open for all the new beginnings and reinventions of your favourite heroes set to release this October.
