Batman: Caped Crusader shows its first trailer, giving fans a preview of the hotly anticipated show.
The trailer has a super-heavy 1940’s aesthetic. If you thought that Batman: The Animated Series had borrowed a lot from the 30’s and 40’s, this show doubles down on it. The series takes place in the 1940’s- which is also soon after the time that Batman got his start in the real-world.
It starts with a radio announcer asking the question: “What do you think about the Batman?”
Well I think the Batman and this new series looks pretty neat. They have a retro vibe and seem to be making an effort to use different villains that are the typical Joker or Riddler.
‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Sets a Throwback Tone
The trailer sets the tone of the show. Gotham City seems to be broiling on the brink of a all-out gang war. The Gotham Police Department are all over Batman and set up a task force to hunt down this dangerous vigilante. Renee Montoya appears. Her character design is more full-bodied than her previous incarnations. Similarly, Alfred is also much more full-bodied. Despite him looking relatively thin, this new design hearkens back to Alfred’s first appearance in the comics when he was known as Alfred Beagle. Speaking of early appearance designs, Catwoman’s design is a direct adaptation of her purple skirt/ green cape outfit she wore from the 1940’s up until the mid-80’s. The series likes to borrow from the characters’ earliest forms, like the disfigured serial killer version of Clayface.
Even characters like Harley Quinn- who debuted in the 90’s-have a redesigned look to fit the 1940’s sensibility. Harley Quinn’s design has a completely different color scheme that she is not traditionally associated with. She is also much more serious than her normal madcap personality. Quite a few villains make surprise appearances. Like, Firefly, the Penguin, and-most shockingly- the Cavalier.
Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and JJ Abrams executive produce on the show. Hamish Linklater provides the voice of Batman and Bruce Wayne.
Batman: Caped Crusader debuts in North America on August 1st on Amazon Prime.
