The birds are back. I love this team so much! We left them debating whether it would be a good idea to get into a sharks mouth. Let’s hope that Birds Of Prey #3 offers a resolution to this thrilling problem.

Love Makes You Stupid

Wowza, I’m not sure if Kelly Thompson was trying to make this particular point, but after reading this issue I can confidently say that love makes you stupid. The whole reason we have a new series is because Black Canary’s doing something potentially suicidal out of love. Now, because of his love for Dinah, we get Green Arrow practically digging his own grave. Thompson has a strong internal monologue running through the issue, so we can clearly tell that Ollie thinks this is a terrible idea. Yet, not once was there a moments hesitation.

Team books are notoriously difficult to write, yet Kelly Thompson handles a ton of characters, seemingly with ease. All the members of the team, the secondary characters, love interests, friends, and possible threats. Having such a huge cast to write for, must be daunting, but you wouldn’t be able to tell with Thompsons writing in this issueThere’s even what some would consider a throw away line about Cas being everyone’s favourite Bat… I cannot tell you how happy that made me!

Back In Time

Leonardo Romero has clearly taken some inspiration from older comics. I can see clear homages to artists that came before. Especially in certain peoples’ hair… I’ll let you figure that one out. Birds Of Prey #3 has its classic sepia toned coloring from the incomparable Jordie Bellaire. I’ve come to think of this mellow style as synonymous with this series. It’s distinctive, it’s powerful and unlike anything I’ve seen Jordie do before… and she does A LOT. The way she tailors her colors to the line-art with every different book she works on is nothing short of magical.

There is nothing I would rather do with my day, than spend it reading Birds Of Prey, as Kelly Thompson’s blowing me out of the water with this plot. I would really like to talk about it with someone, and freak out. So, do me (and yourselves) a favor… read this series!
