Review by Kendra Smart
Harley Quinn #33 is upon us and STini Howard has, yet again, crafted a genius tale.
When we last left Harls in #32, I’m sure that I’m not the only reader who let out a sigh of relief. If there’s one thing we know, any kind of positive is usually just the calm before the storm and worse tidings are on the way.
The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself
Newcomer Lux Kirby starts the issue off by telling Harley about another version of herself being hunted out in Rodney Rabbit’s Earth-26. Lux uses his knowledge to get Harley on board to join him in the investigation. When you read the issue you’ll know why. Ms. Quinn isn’t the only one being hunted.
The Best Laid Plans…And All That Jazz
Tini Howard’s done an amazing job of transitioning from her last story into the new one. Sweeney Boo’s art enhances this narrative and stands on its own. There’s a scene where Harley’s spiraling due to the mental issues she’s been facing, and those are my favorites. Tini Howard’s writing, Sweeney Boo’s art and colors, and Steve Wands’ letters have come together at their best. It shows particularly well in the scenes where either Harley or Ivy are in their own heads.
In the short story, “The Door”, written by Gretchen Felker-Martin, with art by Hayden Sherman, and letters by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, nightmares are used to process things, and that’s what we are treated to in this amazing and terrifying nightmare… from inside the mind of Harley Quinn herself. Just what is her brain trying to work out? This tale is a horrifying treat, to say the least.
Conclusion
Harley Quinn #33 delivers both a beginning and an end. Finally the question of what certain people wanted, who were involved with Harley ages ago, has been answered. This is a promise that I hope to see kept as the next few issues unravel what’s been sown by Tini Howard since she took over this title. I look forward to seeing you all next issue!
