The Brave
Bright reds and blues really make Wonder Woman and Superman stand out as pain drips down the canvas. The artist had this to say, about creating this piece of the iconic superheroes:
“I’m showcasing two of my lifelong favorite characters, and instead of them gazing directly at the viewer or up towards the sun in a heroic manner, they are ‘back-to-back’ in a protective manner. Also, their eyes are slightly downward and introspective, they have the ‘weight of the world’ on their shoulders…and on their minds.
I believe these characters represent the very best that we can be as humans, they are also not regular humans themselves, but that doesn’t mean that their decisions don’t also carry as much weight as their strength. They too would be burdened by their decisions, their actions….or their lack of action.
For that reason, I find this piece carries an ‘emotional weight’ and makes both of these Super Heroes, a little more human, a little more like us, yet they still remain a symbol of strength and of character.”
Two of a Kind
Hero and villain clash as Gotham City burns behind the villain, and is calling for help from the hero. Moore has also talked about this piece, saying:
“The never-ending battle between good and evil…light and dark will never end, and the historic battles between the Dark Knight of Gotham City and the cunning The Joker are nothing less than legendary. But how much separates them, and how far will each go to achieve their goals? Does it take a vigilante who fights from the shadows, or is Batman™ truly the only force to stand against The Joker.
Each of these two has a bit of each other in their foe, and maybe that’s why they are so evenly matched. Who IS Gotham City… and is it represented by the cunning Joker…or the relentless Batman, who will never give up his quest to save his city from burning?”
