Abyss Action Figure Announced By McFarlane Toys

McFarlane Toys have wasted no time in spotting the potential in a formidable new Batman villain who debuted only just last year. Featuring in their McFarlane Collector Edition line of DC Multiverse toys, the terrifying Abyss action figure is now available to order.

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote “He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. If you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you” (Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future, 1886).

Bruce Wayne came up against a dark reflection of himself, in Batman vol. 3 #118 (2022) and could conceivably have been defeated had he not found a way to keep his own inner demons at bay.

Not to be confused with the New Earth version, Prime Earth Abyss was created when Lex Luthor took a criminal with a tragic past and an obsession with Batman, and gave him the training and the resources to create a new version of the Dark Knight. An experimental procedure imbued him with the power to manipulate darkness, but when Luthor became disappointed with his creation and abandoned him, it proved too much for Abyss. who set himself on the revenge-fuelled path as a villain.

Created by writer Joshua Williamson and designed by illustrator Jorge Molina, Abyss looks something like a harbinger of death with his ragged cloak, crosses over his eyes, rib-cage effect on his armor, and a double-bladed scythe. His gas mask-inspired helmet protects him from the gasses he releases from his talon-like gauntlets.

The McFarlane Toys 7″ Abyss action figure comes with the all-important scythe, alternative left hand, card art stand and base. Perfectly proportioned, the sculpt translates the gothic horror of the character cementing an instantly iconic look that I’m sure we’ll see again.

Eventually, Abyss’ activities in Badhnisia caught the Dark Knight’s attention, and led to the involvement of the Batman Incorporated collective. Abyss was a match for the challenge, getting himself within a hairsbreadth of assassinating Lex Luthor, taking out members of Batman Inc. and going the distance with Batman himself.

By the end of the story arc, Bruce couldn’t help but acknowledge his sympathy towards Abyss, recognizing something familiar in his tragic path. A new villain with an iconic, archetypal look whose existence holds a mirror up to Bruce Wayne, it didn’t take long for McFarlane Toys to understand the significance of this new character, hence the release of the Abyss action figure.

The McFarlane Toys Abyss action figure is available now.
