A posthumous interview has revealed that notable actor Ray Liotta rejected starring in Tim Burton’s classic 1989 Batman movie.
Liotta became famous for his work in movies like Goodfellas and Field of Dreams. He ultimately passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2022. However, Deadline has published an interview retrospective that was conducted before his death. He divulged some juicy details, but Bat-fans will be amused that he was approached to be in Batman in the late 80’s. However, he turned down the offer because he thought that the film would fail.
“Something Wild came out, so I was getting attention from that. My agent called me up and said, “Tim Burton would like to meet you. He’s doing a movie, Batman.” There were never any superhero movies then. That was pretty much the first one. I said, “Are you f*cking nuts? Batman?!” I’m going, “No, that’s stupid.” Who was stupid? I was stupid because I didn’t know.”
Ultimately, Ray Liotta expressed much regret over rejecting the offer since Burton’s Batman went on to be the biggest movie event of 1989. But of course, hindsight is 20/20. Who could have predicted that Batman would go on to be a multi-billion dollar movie franchise and be one of the stepping stones to a superhero cinema domination?
It’s is worth noting that Liotta did not specify what role he was offered. While most news outlets assumed he was being offered Batman, he could have easily been approached to play the Joker or even Harvey Dent. Unfortunately, Liotta never was able to participate in the Batman films before he died.
But for my money, I’d say he’d make an excellent Two-Face.
