Exclusive Sinestro Corps Batman Action Figure Feeds The Fear

Sinestro Corps Batman, those are three words that would widen the eyes of any criminal in Gotham City. To be fair, they’ll do the same for any collector, but in anticipation rather than fear. Thankfully, McFarlane Toys recently Tweeted the reveal of the Sinestro Corps Batman 7″ Gold Label action figure, now exclusively available from Target.

Back in 2013 in Green Lantern #17, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Ivan Reis, a yellow ring chose Batman. At first glance, it seems a curious choice for the ring usually associated with villains of the DC Lantern universe, but the ring was attracted to Batman’sprime intention since day one… to instill fear in his enemies. However, it didn’t count for his will to be strong enough to resist the lantern power on offer to him, and he quickly discarded it. This was the teaser.

Jump forward to the Forever Evil (2013) event story from the same year, and Bruce revealed that he kept a yellow ring after the Sinestro War. When The Power Ring turned up with the Crime Syndicate, including Deathstroke and Blockbuster, Batman did the only thing he could against the phenomenal alternative Green Lantern power, and that was to slip on the yellow ring. Cue a transformation.

The result was a simple but striking variation on the Batsuit. Of course, Sinestro’s costume is black and yellow which made it a comfortable blend. The Batsuit is blackened and the yellow across Sinestro’s shoulders and chest is replicated, including the corps symbol. The yellow finishes include Batman’s boots, gloves, and the stripe around the left arm’s bicep, the arm that wears the ring. Surprisingly, though effectively, the usually yellow utility belt is chrome, and thanks to possessing the power of the ring, there’s no need for the gadgets Batman used to store in it.

Cloaked in the colors of Sinestro, suddenly Bruce’s grim expression becomes even more formidable. In fact, the sight of him posed with the yellow ring on his clenched fist makes you wonder just what untapped potential someone of his guile and intellect would bring to the Sinestro Corps. Does anyone else feel a shudder?

In the comic, the combination didn’t last much longer after the initial confrontation – which is a shame because The Power Ring was rattled. Unfortunately, Bruce’s stored weapon only had a small fraction of power left in it and the brevity of the appearance merely reflects the necessity of putting the genie back in the bottle. The potential in the idea, coupled with the cool design would merit a story all of its own.

McFarlane Toys recognizes that, so I love how they jump on these brief, exciting moments of “what if…” and run with them. It’s what good superhero comics are made of.

The Sinestro Corps Batman Gold Label figure by McFarlane Toys is available exclusively from Target.
