Matt Reeves Teases Emotional Jeopardy In ‘The Batman: Part ll’

Matt Reeves is no stranger to taking us down dark and emotional paths in his movies, and he has spoken about the emotional jeopardy in The Batman: Part ll. We’re pretty sure that just means things will only be worse than in the first film, which makes us wonder exactly what he has in store for us.

Appearing on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast in March 2022, Reeves answered questions from host Josh Horowitz about the makings of The Batman (2022). The director explained how the script is so different from when it was first handed to him, what changed when Ben Affleck stepped down from playing Batman, Reeves’ process of plotting and piecing together the movie, and getting into Batsy’s head to stay true to the character we know and love.

It’s an extremely interesting episode. He even talks about Penguin’s upcoming series, the Joker deleted scene, and the ideas that went into it.

When Horowitz asks whether Reeves thinks Robin, a teenager, could exist in this “Horrible Gotham, the pit of despair” that he has created, the director says that he doesn’t know.

Reeves explains that he doesn’t know exactly what the story will be, but:

For me, whatever that story’s going to be, it’s going to be to take these characters and specifically Batmans character, put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. […] There has to be emotional stakes so you get drawn into that characters story. […] There’s a deep-dive that already happened at the beginning and now I’m gonna have to deep-dive again.

The Batman: Part ll is due to begin filming this winter and will most likely be returning to Liverpool, England, and Glasgow, Scotland to film on location. As we wait for the next part, however, The Penguin series will air on HBO Max, with Colin Farrell returning to play Penguin. There’s currently no release date, but we know that it will be sometime this year.

The Batman: Part ll is set to release on October 3, 2025.
