Barry Keoghan Talks About His Joker Scene In ‘The Batman’

It’s been just over a year since The Batman’s deleted scene was released, and actor Barry Keoghan has finally spoken about playing the Joker.

We got new versions of several beloved characters in the movie, and when director Matt Reeves released this five-minute clip, we got a completely new Clown Prince. We don’t get a good look at the villain with the camera never properly focusing on him, but we see enough to be grossed out.

In the scene, Robert Pattinson’s Batman comes to interrogate the prisoner patient about the clues that Paul Dano’s Riddler is leaving behind for him. In true Joker fashion, he’s far from helpful and only laughs at the Dark Knight’s attempts to solve the clues. Reeves has said that the scene was cut because he didn’t think it helped the story progress, although we do hear the villains chilling laughter right at the end of the movie.

In an interview with Collider, Keoghan said:

It’s very intimidating playing the Joker. Heath Ledger was the best for me. So you have a lot of people to draw from, but again, you bring your version to it. That’s what I do with any character I play, is no one has seen my version of it. Going back to it, I don’t want to be like so-and-so, and follow that method and that method. I want to do me.

He goes on to say that Reeves had been completely supportive of where he wanted to take the character:

He was another great director at communicating what he wants in the most delicate way and making you understand. That’s the most important thing for me, is being able to understand what my director wants. He’s just amazing and he was so on board with me, and same with producer Dylan Clark and getting to do the scene with Rob Pattinson and Paul Dano was just, again, masterclasses.

The Batman 2 is scheduled to start filming at the end of this year. We currently have no idea which villains Batsy will be protecting Gotham from at the moment, but we hope that there’s still a chance for this new, scared, messed-up Joker to make an appearance, one that actually stays in the movie and lasts longer than five minutes. Barry Keoghan has also expressed his desire to return:

Obviously, I’d love another crack. I’ve got a ton of back work done on him. If an opportunity does arise, but, you know, they make the call, and I’ve got to respect that. I’ve got a few other things I’d love to bring.

Actually, I have this little half-Moleskin book I’ve written a lot in already, and so yeah, I want to show people what that is.

All we can do is wait for any news as production starts up about what could happen in The Batman: Part ll, which s set to hit cinemas on October 3rd, 2025.
