Everyone’s beloved Kevin Conroy passed away late last year, and now, Mark Hamill has announced that he will not be returning to voice Joker again. The two legends brought life to these mortal enemies for many years, so Conroy’s passing hit Hamill very hard. Now, if there is no Batman, there is no Joker.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Hamill was asked about his portrayal of Joker and he admitted that he doesn’t think he’ll be returning to the role after Conroy’s death.
He said:
They would call and say, “They want you to do the Joker,” and my only question was, “Is Kevin Batman?’”If they said yes, I would say, “I’m in.”
We were like partners. We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.
They first began voicing the characters in 1992’s seminal Batman: The Animated Series. Since then they worked on Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993), Batman: The Killing Joke (2016), and the Batman: Arkham video game series. Together, their final time voicing their characters will be in the upcoming Rocksteady game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
The two worked hard to build their versions of these legendary figures into what most fans know them to be, they are the voices we hear when we remember the characters. Losing Kevin Conroy was very saddening, and now also losing Mark Hamill’s Joker, is tough. DC will not be the same without this dynamic duo and their incredible voices bringing such iconic characters to life… but we get it.
