DC’s Golden Age superheroes are back and better than ever with a new Justice Society Of America series, written by Geoff Johns and featuring art by Mikel Janín.
Originally introduced into the DC Universe in the 1940’s All-Star Comics #3, JSA gave readers a team made up of Atom, Doctor Fate, Green Lantern, the Flash, Hawkman, Hourman, Sandman, and the Spectre. Over time, the comics entered the Silver Age, and several heroes were recreated for the younger fans; like Barry Allen whose popularity quickly surpassed that of the original Flash, Jay Garrick. Since the characters in the Gold Age and the Silver Age were so similar, DC created the thing Flash likes to mess with the most: The Multiverse.
Each universe in the multiverse has its own versions of different characters, some completely separate from each other, some crossing over and creating all kinds of chaos. While Earth-One was home to the Justice League, Earth-Two held the Justice Society, until The Flash #123’s “Flash of Two Worlds” where these different universes met, because, of course, Barry. They have had frequent crossovers since.
In 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot, the multiverse was destroyed and all the different Earths were combined into one. With every reboot since then, the Justice Society heroes would de-age or some member would suddenly have new sidekicks. In the New 52 reboot in 2011, the Justice Society’s history was mostly destroyed and they weren’t seen again until 2019 in Justice League’s Doom War arc, and again recently in Dark crisis #3.
The newest reboot, Justice Society of America #1, features the original Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman, as well as other beloved JSA members. The Time Masters, DC’s defenders of the time stream, are also rumored to make an appearance.
Johns says:
There will be familiar faces re-joining the team, like Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, as well as long-lost members returning, like Beth Chapel and Yolanda Montez, and a new Golden Age legacy hero first hinted at in the end of Flashpoint Beyond.
Mikel Janín is doing the work of his career on this.
Justice Society of America #1 is scheduled to be released on November 22 this year.
