Pennyworth unveiled its trailer for season three, as well as the new title Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler.
Jack Bannon’s Alfred Pennyworth will return as a super-spy, pre-butler character. Season three features an unusual creative choice where it will resume Alfred’s story after a five-year time skip since the end of the previous season. The previous season ended with Martha Wayne giving birth to a baby girl. However, now that there’s a been time jump, it’s unclear how much of that plot will factor into the new season.
The synopsis says:
[There’s] a five-year time jump, the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse – ushering in a new age of Superheroes and Supervillains.
With a description like that, will fans begin to see the origins of certain super villains or heroes? Given how this is a Batman-centric show, we will probably see the beginnings of Bat-villains, like the Penguin or Riddler. However, a fan dream/ hope is that the show will feature cameos from classic comic book characters.
Imagine if Alfred came into contact with Alan Scott’s Green Lantern to fight Icicle, or how easy would it be to see a team-up with a more grounded hero, like Wildcat or Black Canary? In other words, the series should totally take advantage of using the Justice Society!
Pennyworth’s New Title
In case you were wondering, yes, the full title is now called Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler, and yes, there’s plenty to criticize in the name change. The biggest reason is that the name’s misleading and is clearly an attempt to draw in viewers with the Batman brand name, without ever showing Batman.

Also, why is it called The Origin of Batman’s Butler? The show is clearly an espionage thriller, not a drama about the domestic arts. Is the origin going to explain how Alfred became a butler? Will we see him learning how to properly set a table? Is this the start of Alfred learning how to dust? Will we see the internal struggles of him attending butler school (which is actually a real thing)?
With the title change, it just makes me think about the joke from Teen Titans Go to the Movies. The film satirized how Warner Bros. repeatedly exploited the Batman name by making a pointless spin-off about every Batman-related thing, including – surprise – an Alfred spin-off movie.
Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler will premiere on HBO Max in October.
