DC Superheroes Are Coming to Webtoon

DC Entertainment and Webtoon have struck a deal to feature many classic superheroes and villains in several new webcomic series.

The deal means that the two companies will collaborate on creating stories featuring DC superheroes. This will potentially expose the DC universe to a brand new demographic of audience that has grown up reading webcomics. DC Senior Vice President Daniel Cherry III revealed that the online video channel will be providing the creative teams.

DC is excited to introduce our iconic characters to a new generation of fans worldwid. [DC Comics will be] working closely with the Webtoon writers and artists to adapt our characters and stories to Webtoon’s mobile format. Our shared goal is to create fun and compelling DC stories that all readers will enjoy.

What Does a DC/Webtoon Collaboration Look Like?

Webtoon Entertainment US CEO David Lee has emphasized how the deal will help both companies.

{Webtoon takes] well-known [intellectual properties] like DC’s to develop into content for younger generations. It is going to be beneficial for DC and Webtoon.

While details are scarce on what creative process will look like, fans can speculate.  Webtoon is a South Korea-based company that’s famous for making manga-inspired, romantic drama-filled, long-form stories. Some of its top hits include Olympus Lore and True Beauty. The site is wildly popular amongst teens and young adults for that style of storytelling. The popularity has grown from webcomics to now making television shows based on their series.

DC seems to be making this partnership to reach a whole new demographic of audience. So it is possible that they want to tell Webtoon-style stories using their characters.

It will be interesting to see where the partnership goes in the next few years.

Webtoon also has partnerships with Legendary, Pow! and Top Cow/Image.
