‘Wipeout: The Suicide Squad Special’ is Coming Soon!

I honestly never thought I’d live to see the day. As many fans know, comics and superhero movies are becoming more popular and have even entered the mainstream. Therefore, it should be a surprise to no one that The Suicide Squad is incredibly anticipated and is rife with opportunities for promotion and crossovers.

There’s an upcoming episode of Wipeout on its way that will feature several actors from The Suicide Squad, as well as James Gunn himself. Of course, considering John Cena’s role in both, this crossover shouldn’t be too surprising.

Cena fans know that the retired wrestler has been expanding his resume through several means. Comic fans know that he’ll be portraying Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, and it’s spin-off TV series, but the wrestler turned actor has also done well enough in his career to become a host of the TBS reboot of the reality competition show Wipeout. Cena co-hosts the hilarious, obstacle-filled show with comedian Nicole Byer and in-field reporting co-host Camille Kostek.

The actor/wrestler is a co-producer on the show, explaining his sway on the show’s production. Because of this, as well as Cena’s recent involvement with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the upcoming HBO series Peacemaker, Cena was able to pull a few strings for a special upcoming episode of Wipeout.

What we know

According to the linked trailer above, some of The Suicide Squad actors will be appearing in the special episode. Aside from Cena (Peacemaker), special guests will include Nathan Fillion (T.D.K.), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), and Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher II). Obviously, I am personally most excited about the talented David Dastmalchian! But Nathan Fillion is one of my faves too!

The cast will appear via Zoom or Skype, but it’s clear from the promotional material that The Suicide Squad‘s writer/director James Gunn will be appearing in the flesh. In the video, Gunn jokes that he’s there because Cena may or may not have taken his Peacemaker costume. This also made me laugh since I was curious if Cena took the film’s costume or his character’s costume from James Gunn’s Peacemaker show.

Let’s go!

This episode somehow looks like an even more fun version of an already entertaining show. Creating a The Suicide Squad themed episode of Wipeout is a brilliant way to promote both the show and the film. I’m excited to see James Gunn onscreen and the cast cheer on the competitors. The special might not be the most typical crossover between franchises, but I’m looking forward to it!

“Wipeout: The Suicide Squad Special” will air on TBS on August 1.

The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.

Peacemaker will be released on HBO Max in 2022.
