‘Nightwing’ Movie: Batman’s Role Revealed

There have been many rumours over the last few years as to whether the Nightwing movie will happen or not, but this hasn’t stopped director Chris McKay, revealing some small things about what he plans if he finally does get to create his vision. Like Batman’s potential role in the film.

It was going to be real, it was going to be a character study about this guy who grew up with sort of a bad dad. How that made him as a young adult try to fight off and go as far away from that world as humanly possible and get dragged back into it.

Batman and Robin. Together again for the first time

The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson has always been a bit rocky. Honestly, all Robins have a bit of a strained relationship with the Dark Knight, but as the very first Robin, Grayson’s past with Wayne was a bit difficult. This isn’t surprising, since they were both trying to work through their (obvious) traumas by fighting crime in Gotham together. I’d like to say that Batman has learned from his mistakes… but I can’t.

Nightwing and Batman have fought side-by-side innumerable times since Grayson’s introduction into the DC Universe in 1940, however, they’ve also had their own fights on occasion. Although Grayson hasn’t gone toe-to-toe with Bruce nearly as much as he has with his adopted brothers; the perks of being the older sibling. All of these struggles have come with many wonderful quotes from Dick, admitting that Batman wasn’t the perfect father but he appreciates everything he did for him regardless.

You molded me and taught me, Bruce. For years, I lived under the shadow of The Batman. I wanted to get away, to be my own man. Yet, when I chose a costume and a name, they reflected you. You’re a part of me, Bruce. I can’t deny it. And I don’t want to any longer. I just wanted you to know that. That, and one other thing — I’m proud to have been Robin.

From this, at times, questionable relationship, it makes me wonder just what McKay will decide for the two. Will Grayson be a rebellious teen trying to escape the Bat Family and his Robin identity. Maybe it’s when he’s venturing out on his own and trying to figure out being a hero, and not a sidekick? There are many paths he could chose for Nightwing and Batman’s story to take, but all we can do is cross out fingers and hope that eventually the movie will begin production. For this, McKay said to The Bear Cave:

So to me, I still hold out a lot of hope I’m still going to make that movie. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, but certainly no one has said “hey kid, you’re not making that movie.” In fact, if anything they’ve said “today we’re not prioritising that movie,” but they still want to make a Nightwing movie, so it’s something I think is still important to them.
