Peter Capaldi Has Gravitas in ‘The Suicide Squad’

The Suicide Squad keeps getting better. While the tone of the film is supposed to be a dark comedy, there’s a variety of differently experienced actors who will bring the cast to life. Many of these actors have not had the opportunity to display their comedic skills. Others have no experience with dark comedy in particular. One of these variously experienced actors is Peter Capaldi.

Capaldi has played a crass and comedic character in The Thick of It, but is perhaps more famous for his portrayal of the 12th Doctor in Doctor Who. Both roles are very different and Capaldi is continuing to expand his acting portfolio.

The Scottish actor will portray The Thinker, a villain from The Flash comics. First introduced in 1943, the inventor originally wore a helmet to augment his powers. In later iterations, he had components from his helmet fused with his skull. Based on a new TV spot released to promote The Suicide Squad, The Thinker’s appearance will be based on the second version.

Despite being an iconic villain in The Flash’s story, The Thinker has not yet been portrayed on film. Peter Capaldi’s version in The Suicide Squad will be the first, though a fantastic version has appeared on The CW’s Flash TV show.

Capaldi’s costars have said that fans should be excited to see The Thinker brought to life in film. Margot Robbie commented on Capaldi’s performance to Den of Geek, saying,

The character is definitely done justice… (Peter Capaldi)’s such an exceptional actor and he’s such a lovely guy… I don’t want to give away anything, so I won’t tell you what to expect, but he brings gravitas to the role.

Fans are hoping that Capaldi’s version of the character will survive Gunn’s film so that he might appear in the upcoming The Flash movie. Sadly, there are no clear signs of that being possible.

Despite usually being quite serious, we look forward to what Capaldi can bring to the role of The Thinker. Keep your eyes on this space for more news about The Suicide Squad!

The Suicide Squad will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
