Harley Quinn a Catalyst of Chaos in ‘The Suicide Squad’

Margot Robbie talks about Harley Quinn’s role in The Suicide Squad.

The Suicide Squad will be the next film to debut within the DC Extended Universe. The film will introduce the world to a plethora of villains and anti-heroes, both large and small. It will also bring back a few characters from 2016’s Suicide Squad, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. We’ve also seen the character in her own outing, along with the Birds of Prey, last year in Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). According to Robbie, her next chapter will be even more chaotic. One that director James Gunn evidently agrees with, telling Total Film:

One of the first things I said to James was, I think Harley is a catalyst of chaos. She’s not necessarily your narrative center, and sometimes it’s great when plot points can rest on other characters’ shoulders, and she can be the thing that erupts a whole sequence of events. That’s something I felt he agreed with, based on what I was reading in the script.

The actress also went on to chat about how Harley has changed under a different director:

[In terms of] how she’s changed, it’s just always interesting to explore what characteristics different directors gravitate towards from the character. The common denominator is the source material, which is what I always built the character off anyway. Then she evolves in different ways under different people’s direction.

On Her Previous Incarnations of Harley Quinn

This isn’t the first time Robbie has portrayed the character under a different director. She first took on the Harley Quinn role under David Ayer for the first Suicide Squad movie. For a short time, she was set to reprise the role with Ayer helming Gotham City Sirens; however, that’s one of the many planned DCEU films that are now either on hold or canceled. It would be Cathy Yan who would next bring the character to the big screen in 2020’s Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Robbie has previously had this to say about different director’s take on the character:

It’s just interesting to see what a different filmmaker makes of Gotham and these characters and Harley, really. I’m fascinated by what James Gunn finds interesting in her compared to what [Birds of Prey director] Cathy [Yan] finds interesting, compared to what [Suicide Squad director] David [Ayer] found interesting about her. [James is] such a comic book lover, so it’s going to be rooted in the source material, which is always important to me.

It won’t be too long before we get to see what kind of chaos Robbie and Gunn have cooked up for Harley Quinn; The Suicide Squad opens in theaters (and HBO Max) on August 6th, 2021.
