Is there a future for James Gunn and DC beyond The Suicide Squad?

The TL;DR answer: maybe?

Gunn has confirmed that he has finished The Suicide Squad and it’s ready for release with full VFX. In addition, while answering some fan questions, he has alluded to there being “more on the horizon” for his future with DC.

Sure, it’s in the broadest way possible and could be that he’s still working on the Peacemaker series, but that won’t stop the Internet from speculating.

While The Suicide Squad may be in the can, the filmmaker is just over halfway done with its spinoff series. Gunn has previously had this to say about it:

Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.

Peacemaker certainly does seem like the unlikely character to take a closer look at from The Suicide Squad, but from what we’ve seen of the trailer, John Cena is doing one heck of a job with the character. Cena, being a professional wrestler, is charming, and it shows on the screen.

When it comes to the film and the character, Cena has said:

I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.
