These ominous words rang out in a video shared by Dwayne Johnson on Twitter. In the clip, screens in New York’s Times Square went black before lightning relit them. Johnson’s voice is heard intoning the quote listed above. Finally, the film’s title and release date appear on all the surrounding screens.

Johnson took to Twitter on March 28 to share the teaser of the news and fans immediately became excited. While there has been some recent news surrounding the film and its cast, fans have had to wait for some time for more word of Black Adam‘s future.

Originally announced a decade ago, what will now be a sequel to the incredibly popular Shazam! (2019) has gone through struggles to make it to production. The coronavirus pandemic caused huge delays in filming, but with the release date moved to next year, progress will certainly be made soon.

For those who don’t know the lore, comics originally introduced Black Adam as the first successor to the original Shazam. Originally known as Mighty Adam, the hero fell to temptation, and decided to use his new powers for selfish reasons. Then renamed Black Adam, he became one of the mightiest villains in the DC Universe. In the comics, Black Adam faces off against the original Captain Marvel (no, not this one, the character you may know as SHAZAM!). This connection explains how the new spinoff/sequel might be shaped.

Despite Black Adam usually appearing as a villain in the comics, the film seems to be headed in a different direction. The movie will instead introduce the Justice Society of America, leading the titular character on a possibly very divergent path. Other stars in the project include Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate.

We shall have to wait and see if the continuity of the Shazam! storyline will continue. Either way, next July seems like too long to wait for Black Adam to hit the silver screen. Hopefully, Dwayne Johnson and other actors involved in the project will share more juicy details with anticipating fans soon.

Black Adam hits theaters July 29, 2022.
