Zack Snyder Not Getting Paid For ‘Justice League’

Zack Snyder recently sat down with Vanity Fair to talk about the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The interview touched on various subjects, such as Bruce and Lois getting together romantically, the reason he initially left the project and the long road to the Snyder Cut.

One of the more interesting bits of information that came out is Snyder revealed he isn’t getting paid for Justice League. Snyder explains:

I didn’t want to be beholden to anyone, and it allowed me to keep my negotiating powers with these people pretty strong.

This is a pretty incredible move by the director. Thanks to the previously mentioned interview, Snyder revealed that he had to constantly fight with the studio regarding Justice League. Whether it was about runtime, character arcs or humor. Everything was a battle, so after the tragic death of his daughter, he lost the will to fight them.

Instead of accepting a pay-check, Snyder opted to keep his creative control and make the 4-hour film that he wanted to.

The Snyderverse Comes To An End

Unfortunately, the Justice League Snyder Cut will likely be the last DC film we see from the director. Of course, if you didn’t like his films then this may be welcome news, I suppose.

Look, I never thought I’d be here doing this. I didn’t think I’d be finishing Justice League. The truth is, and it’s been widely reported, and I have no issue, this is an old movie I’m working on. The DC Universe has gone and branched off and done its own thing, and that’s fine. As far as what I did, and as far as what my vision for what I wanted to do with these characters, and the journey I wanted them to go on, it’s well known that I planned on more movies – five movies or something – but I’m busy. I’ve got a lot going on.

The planned movies he’s referring to is the five film arc that was first revealed in May 2018. It’s understandable that Zack Snyder has made peace with being done with DC films, as it’s been almost 4 years since he stepped down. He’s obviously had time to find other projects to work on, such as his upcoming Netflix film Army of the Dead, so I’m sure making the Snyder Cut is giving him some closure to feel good about walking away.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League comes out on March 18th on HBO Max, as well as worldwide on various services.
