‘The Suicide Squad’ Director James Gunn Reveals if DC Prevented the Use of Certain Characters

Article by Daniel Chavez

The absolutely bonkers cast for The Suicide Squad was announced at DC Fandome a few weeks ago, and now director James Gunn has revealed if DC prevented him from using certain characters in the film.

In a recent post on Instagram, Gunn shared some juicy new intel on Task Force X’s next mission, namely that DC did not prohibit him from using any characters while putting together his version of the team, which last appeared on screen in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Rather than choosing any big names, Gunn chose some deep cuts like Bloodsport (who will be played by Idris Elba) and Savant (who will be played by Michael Rooker).

Check out the Instagram post:

Gunn has proven his talent in making obscure characters lovable, and memorable, as evidenced in his work on Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, so it’ll be exciting to see what he does with the colorful cast of The Suicide Squad.

Some other tidbits revealed on Instagram included the fact that film will be inspired by the classic 1967 classic “The Dirty Dozen” and that the future scene stealer Weasel (played by Sean Gunn) will be a mix of practical and CGI effects.

Set to be released August 6th 2021, The Suicide Squad cast includes returning veterans Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. We also get new recruits Idris Elba as Bloodsport, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as John Economos and King Shark (on-set reference), Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, John Cena as Peacemaker, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Joaquin Cosio as General Mateo Suarez, Juan Diego Botto as Luna, Storm Reid as Tyla, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, and Taika Waititi in an unknown role.
