James Gunn Unveils 3 Posters for ‘The Suicide Squad’

Article by Adam Poncharoensub

Following the incredibly fun DC FanDome panel for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, Gunn took to Twitter to unveil 3 posters for the upcoming flick and they are spectacular.

Did you see James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad panel at DC FanDome yesterday? For me, it was easily the best one, with the WW84 panel as a close second. The panel was high-energy and laugh out loud hilarious throughout most of it. I suppose it makes sense considering you get a giant boisterous group like this together and just let them go. Having always liked Michael Rooker, I now love him after seeing this panel. The dude is a national treasure.

Then, there’s that insane roll call. I think my yelps of excitement increased with each new reveal. I don’t have the foggiest idea who 90% of the characters are, but I love that I don’t know who they are. Gunn seems to specialize in popularizing obscure characters, making them interesting and relatable. And in the end, they’re all played by some great actors. Once again, I invoke the Rooker. And did you see Harley Quinn? She looks absolutely phenomenal. Finally, a Harley that I recognize!

Boom.

Following that panel, James Gunn jumped on Twitter to unveil 3 posters for TSS. The first two are a set of nearly identical, bombastic action sequences with the new iteration of Task Force X. A wonderful, photorealistic look at the cast. These are not the official posters of the film, mind you. Gunn referred to them as FanDome Fan posters, so it seems they’re special edition posters as part of the big event.

Gunn jumped on Twitter to reveal the first and quickly followed up with its variation. It’s just a costume swap for some characters, the most obvious of which is Harley, jumping from her costume to a dress.

Take a look:

The colors and art remind me of the beautifully illustrated posters of the 60s and 70s. Kind of a grindhouse-y look and feel to them. And if “Boom.” is the slogan for the flick, I honestly don’t know how much more I can love an unreleased movie. I really hope that Gunn goes for it, making this the most unabashedly ridiculous, over-the-top, yet self-aware movie. Gunn can pull it off. He has the wit and storytelling ability.

For even more of a treat, Gunn returned to Twitter for yet another DC FanDome Fan poster. This time, all the funky, punky character art used during the roll call have been thrown into a large collage for a poster. And it’s also brilliant.

A completely different art style. This time, they employ bright, vibrant coloring that looks like they used markers. The pencilling and coloring isn’t particularly clean. They’re not meant to look gorgeous at all, but they work for the tone of the movie.

Massive roster of expendable characters

With this many characters, this movie is bound to be absolutely bonkers. And it’s okay because more than 75% are likely gonna die! It’s such a genius idea. With the Suicide Squad, people are guaranteed to be offed, so why not throw in as many random characters as possible and have the most fun with it?

There you go, 3 posters for The Suicide Squad. Considering how great these are, I can’t even fathom what the official posters are going to look like. Okay, I probably should stop gushing. Jeez, I’m exhausted. Still though, did you see Harley? Also, Polka Dot Man! Weasel! This is just too much for one fanboy to take.

The Suicide Squad will hit theatres on August 6, 2021.

DC FanDome continues on September 12, 2021.
