New York Film Critics Online Vote Joaquin Phoenix As Best Actor in 2019 for ‘Joker’

Article by Adam Poncharoensub

While we’re focused on the cash that Todd Phillips’ Joker has raked in, some of us might have forgotten that awards season is quickly approaching. There’s been a ton of a buzz regarding Joker and the potential awards it could also be raking in when the time comes. Even before wide release, it won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, the Golden Lion. In case you needed emphasis, the Venice Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and Joker, a comic book movie, won the top prize. As expected, the awards aren’t stopping. As of yesterday, Joker received another award when the New York Film Critics Online voted Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor.

Deserved recognition

The New York Film Critics Online is composed of online film critics in the New York area. Once a year, they gather to vote on various awards and honors, compiling a Top 10 list. Meeting last night, the NYFCO voted Joaquin Phoenix as Best Actor for his role in Joker. An incredibly deserved honor. While my opinion of this version of the Joker isn’t particularly glowing, I believe that Phoenix was phenomenal in the role. Despite the choices that were made with this Joker that I didn’t agree with, Phoenix made it all work. He was both hated and relatable at the same time, instilling so much dread in every shot he was in. With awards season just around the corner, I can’t wait to see what other honors Phoenix receives.

In addition, while Joker didn’t win any specific awards, it was featured as one of their Top 10 films of the year. This is will likely not be the only list that Joker will appear in, I’m fairly certain.

For you film buffs out there, who are interested in the honorees, take a look here.

Joker is still in theatres everywhere.
