Review by Steve J. Ray
“I’ll Be Judge, I’ll Be Jury”, Batwoman episode 6 continues the evolution of Kate Kane’s relationship, both with Alice and with their father, Jacob. We also get a glimpse into the mind of Mouse and learn the fate of Luke Fox’s father, Lucius.
Rise Of The Villains
As much as she’d be loathe to admit it, I’m really seeing Alice start to soften, when it comes to dealing with Kate. Of course, her relationship with Jacob feels irrevocably destroyed, especially after she stabbed him in last week’s episode.
I absolutely adore this villain as she’s clearly damaged, and not just evil. The fact that she’s someone I can sympathize and empathize with, despite the fact that she’s clearly a psychotic murderer (no, I don’t actually agree with her, nor condone her actions) is a testament to the acting skills of Rachel Skarsten.
Mouse is a different matter. Again, this is a young man who has suffered through most of his life, but his proclivity towards violence and murder, over any kind of constraint or calculation, makes him a scary individual indeed. When you then consider the way that he can become virtually anyone he wants to, the fear factor rises exponentially.
Shades Of Grey
We also meet a new villain this week, in the shape of the Executioner. I don’t want to give away too much, but once again we’ve been introduced to a villain with much more than villainy on his mind.
I love the writing in this series, being given a character who cannot simply be condemned as evil, but who actually has a clear-cut, and arguably justifiable, reason to do what he does, is incredibly refreshing.
I have to give kudos also to Camrus Johnson, as we learn something this week that I’ve been wondering about since the show started. We know that Batman has vanished, and knowing the Dark Knight, he’s probably taken his loyal facotum, Alfred, with him. The question was, what actually happened to Lucius Fox? This week we get answers.
Conclusion
Batwoman episode 6 was good. The plot is moving forward and relationships continue to evolve. While I don’t like the character of Sophie, and Ruby Rose is still trying to find her feet as a leading actress, the rest of the cast and characters are well written and well acted.
I’m fascinated by Alice, intrigued by Mouse, suspicious of Catherine, concerned about Jacob and I adore Mary.
That’s more than enough to keep me invested.
