Review by Fay Clark
The new book Dear Justice League is clearly aimed at younger readers, but please do not let that stop you from either reading it to someone younger, or just reading it for yourselves. Even as an adult I got so much enjoyment out of this book, it was a pleasure to read. We get to see what it would be like if kids were able to just shoot off an email to their favorite Superheroes and heroines asking for help and advice.
Have a problem or question you don’t want to talk to parents or teachers about? No problem! Just email Superman, or Wonder Woman, or Batman, or Hawkgirl, or Green Lantern, or Cyborg, or Flash or even Aquaman. They check their emails semi-regularly and are more than happy to help out and give advice to those in need.
Dear Reader,
Dear Justice League author, Michael Northrop, has done a great job of writing like children do. The questions posed to the heroes really seem like they have come straight from kids. On the flip-side Northrop has also smashed it out of the park when it comes to the heroes, managing to give unique, yet tailored answers from each JL member. You can really hear all their different voices, and the responses are so different from each hero. It was great to read. There was also a great thread of a story line running throughout the book that got a great pay-off at the end.
Illustrator Gustavo Duarte has a lovely style, I think it works really well with the story. The art matches so nicely with the theme of the book and the age group it’s aimed at. Being able to show such emotion, and for the heroes to really question themselves after reading these kid’s emails, it’s something unique and brand new. Duarte makes things easy to follow on the page and has a great eye for detail.
Conclusion
This book was great and I enjoyed reading every page. Old, young or mid-life crisis, age doesn’t matter. Dear Justice League is a book for all, it even answered some of my own questions. This is a precious, cute and all around lighthearted jaunt with the Justice League. I am very happy to have read this, and I know that I will be coming back to it again at some point, just to put a smile on my face. Towards the end of the book we get a sneak peak at the next title in the series. I would just like to say that I cannot wait for that one! I’m always ready for more of this, just throw it my way.
