Gotham is currently in its 5th and final season. Throughout the course of the series, Cameron Monaghan has played both of the Valeska brothers, Jerome and Jeremiah.
At first, everyone thought that Jerome would end up being the Joker, based on how Cameron was portraying the character throughout the show. Then, as his character became more “Joker” like, including having his face cut off and worn like a mask like in Death of the Family, it seemed like it was a sure thing.
Of course, Jerome ended up meeting his demise and we were introduced to his brother Jeremiah, who looked to be our next candidate for the Joker. This time, it seems to be true.
If anyone knows what it takes to be a good Joker, it’s Paul Dini. He is one of the best and most respected Batman writers. He is also the man responsible for the creation of Harley Quinn, from Batman: The Animated Series. Cameron’s portrayal of the Jok… Jeremiah, has gotten the attention of Dini and earned the venerated writer’s seal of approval.
The actor shared a video to his Instagram story of him opening a signed hardcover copy of Paul Dini’s Harley Loves Joker. Dini’s note says
For Cameron – A terrific Joker! Best, Paul Dini.
Cameron captioned the video “Thanks to #PaulDini for the gift!” and flashes a thumbs up at the end.
The series finale of Gotham will be a time jump forward that will show Cameron Monaghan and David Mazouz’s fully realized Joker and Batman, respectively. Here is what Cameron had to say,
All I’ll say is when you have an episode that’s a full-on Batman episode running around in the future… I don’t want to say exactly what my role in that is, but it was kick ass. It’s one of the coolest opportunities I’ve ever had.
There have been some great live-action Joker performances in the past, and it seems like when all is said and done, Cameron Monaghan’s portrayal might just earn his spot in that exclusive club.
Gotham airs Thursdays on Fox at 8 p.m. ET. You can read our latest Gotham reviews here.
