‘Batgirl’ Screenwriter Talks About The Movie’s Script

Screenwriter Christina Hodson has been working on Batgirl’s script ever since Joss Whedon left the project. While the movie is still in the early stages of production, Hodson seems very excited and passionate about her work.

In an interview with Collider, the writer spoke about Batgirl, hinting that Warner Bros. is giving her some creative freedom;

I actually don’t think (she) is that established. A few people remember Alicia Silverstone, but [Batman and Robin] was not one that is seminal. So, I do feel very free, and the studio is being super supportive, in letting me dream up whatever I want to dream up.

Writer’s Paradise

The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl is a huge part of the DC comics universe however, she’s yet to make a big screen appearance. With the upcoming Birds of Prey film fans were hoping to finally see her on screen. That is still a possibility, as she’s neither been confirmed or denied to show up in the film. Fans, and screenwriter alike are excited to see her solo movie debut.

Hodson also talks about what excites her when writing the script, as well as her approach writing such a beloved character;

Many things excite me about Batgirl, but I’m not allowed to talk about that, at all. She’s cool. With all of these characters – the ones that I’m creating and that are original, like Bumblebee‘s Charlie, and the ones I’m getting to inherit and play with – they’re independent, intelligent, capable, interesting and nuanced, and nuanced really is the main thing. They’re not one thing or another. They are flawed, complex, beautiful, wonderful, weird, and fully rounded and fully fleshed out characters. We’ve got so many great actresses out there, that are ready to play these roles, that it’s fun to be writing roles for them.

There is an air of excitement and potential with Batgirl that I haven’t really seen since Wonder Woman, and we all know how well that turned out! If DC and Warner Bros. can get this as right as they got that movie, then things are on the up and up.
