Cameron Monaghan Cast as Superboy in Upcoming ‘Reign of Supermen’ Animated Adaptation

Just two weeks ago, a new animated adaptation of The Death of Superman was released digitally to the world. It would be DC’s second animated attempt at the beloved crossover event, the first being 2007’s Superman: Doomsday.

Similar to the epic Dark Knight Returns adaptation of 2013, this iconic story has been split into two parts. The second of which, Reign of the Supermen is slated for release in early 2019. It seems that a fan has caught a piece of unannounced news with the digital release of The Death of Superman. As in most cases, the movie came with a featurette hyping the next installment into the DC Animated Movies lineup.

Though it was public for several weeks, the Internet didn’t seem to notice.

A fan posted it to Twitter:

As you can glimpse, just under Cameron Monaghan’s name, you can see clearly, Superboy. The fan also juxtaposed the shot of Monaghan with a look at Superboy himself in the upcoming movie. It looks like this Superboy will not only be younger, but a lot less jacked than his original counterpart in the comic book. Maybe they’re taking influences from the current Superboy, Jonathan Samuel Kent… who’s kinda small and shrimpy.

The Joker becomes the Kid?

It wasn’t until just a few days ago, when Monaghan jumped on Instagram, that the news spread throughout the Internet like wildfire. Monaghan will be voicing Superboy in Reign of the Supermen.

Superman Lives

So yes. Basically, Gotham‘s version of Joker will be playing Superboy. Interesting, to say the least. I wonder how a subdued and heroic version of Monaghan will sound. Either way, this is great casting sure to attract Gotham fans. By far, Monaghan remains one of the best parts of Gotham, as he’s had the chance to play TWO different versions of a supposed Proto-Joker. Both of which were insanely (This pun is a happy coincidence for which I will gladly take credit) well acted.

Reign of the Supermen featured 4 different superheroes all claiming to be the Man of Steel, following his death at Doomsday’s hands. This story introduced the new revamped Superboy, Kon-El. The animated adaptation and sequel to Death of Superman will be released in early 2019.
