DC Releases New Variant Covers that Emphasizes Art, Minimizes Clutter

The first thing you look at when you grab the latest issue of your favorite title is, of course, the cover. Covers really allow the artists to go nuts, fully showcasing their artistic ability while hinting at the events going on in the pages within. The covers easily become the most recognizable and remembered part of any key issue. Unfortunately, these days, the art ends up being so obscured by bar codes, logos, and issue information, that a lot of the art ends being lost and hidden.

Well, DC is taking notice to all that and have began a new variant cover movement that minimizes as much of all the clutter that they can. ComicsBeat got the exclusive to unveil two new variant covers to emphasize the art of these crazy talented people. Jim Lee drew a gorgeous cover for Batman #45, while Jim Romita Jr. took on Nightwing #44.

Spring Cleaning?

Take a look below:

The bar code needs to be there to sell the darn comic and the credit must be given to the creators. Otherwise, we have a fantastic view of each cover, free of all the unnecessary header logos meant simply for branding. Anyone picking up any of these comics are going to know what they’re picking up. It reminds me of the growing movement in mobile phones to cut out the bezels for more screen.

Is this something you can get behind? Do you like more art in exchange for less branding? Would you add these to your collection?
