‘Gotham’ Stars Discuss Future of Bruce and Edward

Throughout the almost three seasons of Gotham, Edward Nygma has been one of the constant main characters of Batman’s rogues gallery to appear throughout the series.  In a series that takes place when Bruce is still just a child, learning and training to become the Dark Knight we all know, we get to see the humble beginnings of other famous Gotham figures and the path they take to either battle or ally with the Batman.

For Nygma, we learned that he was a forensic scientist working for the GCPD, who was a bit awkward around his colleagues and enjoyed speaking in riddles.  We then see him go down a dark path of criminal activity after committing a string of murders, framing Jim Gordon, and even spent some time in everyone’s favorite mental institution, Arkham Asylum.  We’ve also seen him work with Oswald Cobblepot to help his campaign for mayor, and is now looking to make a power move to take control of Gotham’s underworld.

While this version of Nygma is slowly becoming the intellectual supervillain we all know, fans shouldn’t expect him to wear anything resembling Jim Carrey or Frank Gorshin.  “He’s got some nice threads…I’m not going to be in a onesie, but yeah-there’s a costume,” Cory Michael Smith (Nygma) joked.

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the suit look from Batman: The Animated Series, so I’d love to see Gotham go in that direction.

It seems like the character has reached the point of no return in Gotham, and his path to becoming the Riddler is now just a matter of time.  Smith noted: “The great difficulty here is that Edward, his opportunity to be a good person and live a normal life is passed.  He knows that his destiny is to wreck havoc.  Now is the time.”

Along with Nygma’s path to Riddler, Bruce Wayne will be taking some major steps to his road to Batman as Season 3 winds down.  The young Dark Knight David Mazouz had this to say:

“Bruce will go through a major transformation in these last eight episodes of the season, and it will result in him making a decision that he’s been searching for, for a very long time.  It will be the most important decision of his life.  He is going to live out the reason he was created, and it will have very bad consequences for Bruce – catastrophic consequences.  I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s not going to be pretty.”

We all know that Bruce leads a hard and difficult life, so it seems like the fun and games are coming to an end for young Bruce.

What do you think?  Are you glad to see the show progressing so quickly to the heroes and villains we love, or do you think it’s too soon in young Bruce’s life?  Let us know!
