It is still in the early stages, but Warner Brothers wants Matthew Vaughn to direct the next Superman solo movie.
This report is coming hot on the heels of news of Matt Reeves officially helming the solo Batman movie. It is well-known that Batman v Superman acted as more of a bridge to the Justice League than an actual sequel to Man of Steel. Now that world building is out of the way, Warner Bros. feels that it is time to focus on Superman again. Now Collider has reported that they have been eyeing Matthew Vaughn to direct Man of Steel 2.
Matthew Vaughn-who directed X-Men: First Class and Kick-Ass– is no stranger to superhero movies. In fact, he is not even a stranger to Superman movies. Back in 2010, he and comic book writer Mark Millar pitched a Superman movie to Warner Bros. The studio went with the pitch that eventually turned into Man of Steel.
What Will Superman’s Future Be With Vaughn?
Given Vaughn’s track record of quirky, but strong character-based action films, his interpretation of Superman can be quite different from Zack Synder’s version. It would quite interesting to see how Vaughn’s vision of Superman meshes with the DC Extended Universe.
Even more intriguing is the question of where to take Superman story-wise. In Batman v Superman, Superman has already fought Batman and killed while battling Doomsday. In Justice League, he will be resurrected and team-up other heroes. So what potential storylines can Superman do next? It would be great if Brainiac could be the villain in the next movie.
Once again, everything is still preliminary. Warner Bros. has barely begun talks yet. So it is possible that Vaughn may not even wind up directing. In the meantime, fans will cross their fingers and hope for the best.
